The Jobs of Yesteryear series combines history and surrealism to tell the stories of obsolete jobs. A contemporary glimpse into the past, these mixed media paintings serve as a reminder of a time and stories long forgotten.

This particular Job of Yesteryear mixed media painting features a mountaineer. The mountains have always called to intrepid explorers and many have answered that call, often with dire consequences. A human and a rope can accomplish a lot in the mountains and this simplicity has undergone little change over the years outside of the advancement in the materials used to clothe the human and make the rope. One fundamental difference between modern mountaineers and their former counterparts is the ability to be rescued by helicopter, a lifeline that can mean the difference between surviving the climb and finding a rocky grave.

The Mountaineer II was created with acrylic paint, and the long-limbed character was cut from paper and collaged with kraft paper. The Jobs of Yesteryear are thought-provoking conversation pieces that will bring an air of history and whimsy to any room.
