The Jobs of Yesteryear series combines history and surrealism to tell the stories of obsolete jobs. A contemporary glimpse into the past, these mixed media paintings serve as a reminder of a time and stories long forgotten.
This particular Job of Yesteryear mixed media painting features a miner. Working in the mines could be terribly dangerous with many calamities claiming the young lives of the workers who spent their days in the dark depths. Those that survived mine collapses or accidents involving equipment were often left marred or disfigured. No longer able to work as before, they would often peddle small wares and rely on the generosity of their community to make a living. The switch to renewable energy, along with many advancements in workplace safety have made the life of the miner much safer in the decades since.
The Miner VI was created with acrylic paint, and the long-limbed character was cut from paper and collaged with kraft paper. The Jobs of Yesteryear are thought-provoking conversation pieces that will bring an air of history and whimsy to any room.
