The Chimney Masons Print

from $75.00

Limited edition print of The Chimney Masons from the Jobs of Yesteryear Series.

Tall chimney construction was a specialized branch of masonry that required immense strength, courage working at withering heights, and a keen sense of engineering. Tall chimneys were typically built to elevate noxious dirty smoke and dangerous sparks, as well as provide vital draft for furnaces. The true art of the chimney builder was in establishing and maintaining the proper "batter" or taper from bottom to top. A small mistake lower down would spell havoc higher up. With the development of cleaner energies, the smokestacks and the masons who built them brick by brick, largely disappeared.
